We're two artists and storytellers with a penchant for the sacred, the absurd, and the unexpected. Sometimes a bit irreverent, always intimate and immersive, our work seeks to celebrate the poetry of modern romance artfully and honestly.

Our first “date” was shooting a wedding in Santa Barbara together and having every guest ask how many years we’d been married and shooting weddings together. We took it as a sign and 8 years ago we officially became Kindred and 7 years ago we became husband and wife.

Connection is at the heart of what we do. The work we feature here did not simply arise from who we are but who we are when we are connected and in alignment with our clients. With that said, we aim to work with creatives with a fondness for film and who treasure fine art in all its forms — the sacred, the poetic, and the strange; kind folks that don’t take themselves too seriously but orchestrate things with intention and tender lovin’ care. Ultimately, clients that approach life artfully, recognize our artistry and seek to collaborate with us.

FEATURED

We’re inspired by the street photography of Vivian Maier and Daniel Arnold, the portraits of porch life by Nicholas Nixon, the Americana of Robert Frank and Richard Avedon, and William Eggleston’s color. With degrees in fine art and philosophy, we also have hearts for the classics, of Caravaggio and chiaroscuro. And ultimately, we’re enchanted by the big and small displays of love, light and movement on a wedding day.

With nearly 200 weddings under our belt, we continue to hold a relentless curiosity about human beings and their behavior; how they love simply and spectacularly, how they hug, cry and cackle. And, of course, the creative process — forever a hot damn mystery we’ll never solve.

and because we ask you, here are our current-as-a-couple three favorite movies...

American Honey

Unobtrusive and uncontrived, we find our way inside the moment without disrupting it. Being a wedding photographer, to us, means learning to let go of control and bear witness to what is arising in each moment, ready and willing to capture it artfully. We’ll help find the best light for key moments and will occasionally whisk you aside for sunset portraits or a quiet, intimate moment at the end of the night.

However, ultimately, we keep a pulse on what’s happening and what you might want or need in a moment.

Each couple’s needs are different. If guidance is needed, Elle is the first to jump in with direction and encouragement. She is also the one to typically be enmeshed in the small and often overlooked exchanges happening throughout the wedding day. Zach provides a peaceful and grounding presence; a fly on the wall, zooming out to capture landscapes, long exposures and guest reactions during speeches. Together we’re rarely in the same place, bringing our two unique perspectives to every moment.

OUR APPROACH

FRIENDLY FAQ's

How many weddings do you take per year?
100! Just kidding. As much as we wish we didn’t need things like rest and water and sleep, we’re humans like you so we limit our season to 25-30 weddings each year. It’s so we can give our whole creative hearts to each step, focusing on quality not quantity (we didn’t make that phrase up but it still works).
How long have you been a photographer?
Elle has been taking photos ever since she picked up her film camera in high school. She started photographing weddings 9 years ago and her and Zach joined forces 8 years ago.
How many images do you include?
Each one of our packages vary based on hours of coverage and number of photographers. But we typically deliver 50-75 images per hour.
What is your turnaround time?
It depends on the time of year you get married! If your wedding is in the heart of the season (April-November) then you can expect the gallery in 12-14 weeks from your wedding date. If you opt for an off season wedding (December-March) then it’s typically 4-6 weeks.
How do payment schedules work?
We require 50% retainer to score your spot on our calendar, and the remaining 50% is due the week following the wedding.
Can you photoshop us?
We don’t photoshop! Since our focus is on emotions and documenting moments, we spend less time removing blemishes and small wrinkles in your clothing. If there’s something you’re particularly self-conscious about let us know and we’ll be conscious of it as we work together.
What do we wear for engagement sessions?
We got you covered (metaphorical much?). For couples shoots, we provide an entire engagement guide that outlines things like choosing location, time of year and yes, clothing. Spoiler alert: there’s a Pinterest board.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, we do. If your venue requests a certificate, please let us know so we can arrange it.
Do you have back up gear?
You betcha! Lots of it.
What happens if you can't make it to our wedding?
We’ll weep but also, we would our best to find a replacement photographer to take our place that we trust with similar style to ours. Although we’re not legally held to do so. If we can’t make it to your wedding your money will be refunded.
What if there is bad weather?
We always embrace the weather! Cloudy skies and rainstorms actually make for beautiful, saturated images. If it’s harsh enough that it would ruin the shoot (or our gear) and we can reschedule, we will.
Do you help in the planning process?
We’d love to! If you need recommendations, help outlining your schedule, finding that must-have dress designer, we’re here to help and make the process as easy for you as possible.
How does covering travel expenses work?
This is on a case by case basis! We require that in addition to the package price, you cover all travel + lodging to any wedding outside the state of California.
Do you photograph families?
Yes! We recently announced this new offering. Reach out to us for portfolio images and more info!
Can we order prints through you?
Yes! We have a client proofing website where you, your family and friends can order prints from. It insures efficiency, affordability and high quality.
